Percy Jackson Reaction - The Lightening Thief: Part 1

Updated: Nov 10, 2021

Hey gods and goddesses! It's Lilliana here, and, looking at how much I've mentioned the PJO series, I don't think that it'd be such a surprise to find out that I'll be doing a post based on the books! I think I'm making a slow but sure progress in making better tittles. Like the HP series, I'll be going through these books in a lot of detail. I hope you enjoy! 😊

My Summary

The first book from the Percy Jackson series, The Lightning Thief, begins with a young, 12-year-old boy who's just so sick and tired of his life. He has 2 medical issues: dyslexia and ADHD, is raised by his kind and understanding mother Sally and is constantly looked down upon at school.

Because of his unknown heritage of immense power, Percy is kicked out of school each year for odd events which weren't exactly caused by him.

Percy was currently in year six and was on a field trip to the museum, when the most strange even happened. After an arrogant girl bullied Percy's dear friend, Grover, Percy defended him, but ended up getting in some serious trouble.

His maths teacher, Mrs. Dodds who obviously dislikes Percy, walked Percy into an abandoned part of the museum and magically (and terrifyingly) morphed into a demonic monster.

Mrs.Dodds instantly charged at Percy, but Mr.Brunner, Percy's favourite teacher throws a mystical and powerful object (a pen) at Percy, which, surprisingly, saved his life.

The pen turned into a stunning sword which Percy used to defeat Mrs.Dodds. But, sadly, Percy got expelled from the school again, and while exiting the school, he heard Grover and Mr.Brunner talking about his unsure future and his growing power.

Percy tried to talk Grover into telling him what they were talking about when they got on the bus, but Grover remained silent. Unfortunately for Percy, the bus just had to break down, so Percy and Grover had no choice but to walk home.

When Percy reaches home, he is confronted by his irresponsible and abusive step-father (aka "Smelly Gabe"), but he escapes by joining his mother.

Sally wanted to get away for a while so she took Percy to the beach where she fist met Percy's father. When Grover arrived, Percy had no choice but to tell the truth to his mother about what actually at school that day.

Sally was becoming distressed and strictly told Percy and Grover to get into the car. Then Percy notices Grover's odd feet, which weren't feet at all, but instead hooves, Grover explains that he's a satyr to a stoned Percy.

As Sally was driving Percy and Grover to "Camp Half-Blood", a Greek monster kills Sally. Percy was furious and fought the monster to death in pained tears.

He keeps the monster's horn as a souvenir of his first defeat. Then facing his new home, he faints.

My Reaction

At the start of the Percy Jackson series, I could already tell that Percy was magical. Uncle Ricky showed a ton of hints that there was something supernatural about him. The fact that Percy always got kicked out of school and the fact that his kind mother never got mad at him made me go into detective mode.

Although some people think of Percy as the "bad boy" type, to me, he seems like an innocent and pure puppy. I mean, he left the chance to be one of the "cool kids" to stick around with Grover, a victim of bullying! Not only that, but his love for his mother officially made me know him as a Mummy's boy.

When Mr.Brunner was introduced into the series, I already worshipped him! Unlike all the other teachers, Mr.Brunner was actually fair to Percy, which is pretty rare. Not to mention it seemed like he knew a lot more about Percy's heritage than Percy himself.

On the class field trip everything seemed fine and normal until Mr.Brunner decided to drop the bomb on us. That time when Mr.B asked about what Kronos did to his kids, I was mortified! I mean, what type of parent decides to eat their kid, because their scared that they might become too powerful?!

Anyways, fast-forward to the fountain scene. I was so mad at the girl for bullying our sweet Grover! I was cheering when Percy decided to step up to her, but was a bit turned down when he pushed her into the fountain. I know that she said some pretty hurtful things, but I'd rather Percy rebelled with his words instead of fists.

Then, I realised that Percy never really pushed her, so I was furious at Mrs.Dodds for still getting Percy into trouble! I mean, what type of human wants to hate someone to that extent?!

That's when I knew that Mrs.Dodds wasn't human. Big surprise! But it seems as though Uncle Ricky still had some cards up his sleeve. Mr.B came rushing in and I was so ready for some action . . . but instead, Mr.Brunner decided to throw a pen at Percy.

I was so expecting the pen to be some type of wand, but then Percy took the cap off and it became a celestial sword! Percy defeated his demonic teacher! But I was still wondering how Percy was able to perfectly use a sword, not to mention kill with it! If that was me, I'd still be wondering how to use the pen as a wand!

One of the things I envy about Percy is that he's got such a sweet mother. No wonder a god fell in love with Sally, she's practically an angel! Not to mention she's got some will power to withstand Gabe!

I love Sally and Percy's relationship, it's so sweet. If only we could kick Gabe out of the picture, those two would be a more perfect family without him.

When Sally decided to go on the trip to the beach, I was ready for some more peaceful and fluffy, mother-son moments, did I mention peaceful?

Then Grover decided to tag along and everything started becoming hectic.

I was sobbing so hard when Sally died! I couldn't pick up the book for days! I was sulking inside my room for what felt like eternity, to me, there was no more meaning in life if I couldn't read any more Mother-Son fluff.

I even imagined myself charging after the Minotaur in some late-night violent dream. After moping for the book for more than 72 hours, I finally mustered enough courage to pick up the book again! And that, was honestly, the greatest decision ever!

A lot like what I mentioned in my "Peek at Harry Potter" post, I was pretty unwilling to read this series after confirming in my head that the School for Good and Evil was the best series ever. (I was a really stubborn child). All my thanks goes to my friends for forcing me with a compass to the throat to read this series!

I learned how to love this series and if you guys would like to view some of my fanfiction, I'd be happy (mostly embarrassed) to post them here as well! I'll be continuing on this series too, so if you're a fan of the PJO series, please make sure to have a read of them! I'm also quite curious to see what you think of this series!

Love,

Lilian
